With its two divisions, Adult & Family Education and Nutrition & Health, the Family and Consumer Science (FCS) program area offers practical information for individuals, families and communities on eating well, managing money, raising children, health literacy and staying active. The primary goal of FCS is to improve the well-being of traditionally underserved families and communities by providing research-based knowledge and principles applicable to their everday lives.
Those housed within FCS work across the spectrum of individual and family needs. These include nutrition, parenting, adult and health literacy, family resource management, physical activity, and assistance to young adults working on their higher education.
Successful office initiatives include the Helping Our Undergraduates Succeed in Education (HOUSE) program; the Summer Food Service program for children; the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP); "Can You Repeat That Please?" health literacy, "More Than Words" adult literacy, and "Baby Think It Over."
Other office initiatives include programming that focuses on active parenting of teens, independent living skills, disease management through diet and lifestyle, babysitting skills, GED attainment, and active living.
